Active Women Arise for Sustainable Development (AWARD) is a civil society organization based in Burundi, committed to empowering girls, women, and communities as active agents of sustainable development. We envision a society where women and girls drive positive change, co-creating resilient, inclusive, and equitable communities. Guided by our mission, vision, and RISE core values, Resilience, Inclusion, Sustainability, and Excellence, AWARD invests in human potential, fostering leadership, innovation, and long-term socio-economic and environmental impact.

What We Do

Promote Economic Empowerment

Implement programs that strengthen the economic independence of girls and women through entrepreneurship, skills development, training, and mentoring.

Enhance Leadership and Participation

Encourage the active involvement of women and girls in planning, decision-making, and leadership at community, local, and national levels.

Support Inclusive Engagement

Facilitate women’s and girls’ participation in economic, social, cultural, environmental, and innovative activities, including research and development initiatives.

Advance Environmental Sustainability

Support community-led initiatives for environmental protection, natural resource management, and climate change adaptation.

Promote Social Inclusion

Conduct community recovery and development actions targeting the most vulnerable groups to ensure equitable socio-economic opportunities and inclusion.

Champion Gender Equality and Rights

Advocate for the promotion of gender equality and the eradication of gender-based violence.

Contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Support initiatives that align with and promote the SDGs within Burundi.
