Empowerment is not a moment. It is a movement. And it is built through concrete, sustained action across multiple dimensions of life.
Here is a closer look at the seven programme areas through which AWARD is creating lasting change for girls, women, and communities across Burundi.
1. Economic Empowerment
Financial independence is one of the most powerful forms of freedom. AWARD implements programmes that strengthen the economic independence of girls and women through entrepreneurship training, skills development, and mentoring. By equipping women with practical business tools and connecting them with networks of support, we help them build livelihoods that are sustainable, dignified, and self-directed.
2. Leadership & Participation
Burundi’s future needs women’s voices at every table. AWARD actively encourages the participation of women and girls in planning, decision-making, and leadership at community, local, and national levels. We train emerging leaders, support women seeking positions of influence, and create platforms where their perspectives shape the decisions that affect their lives.

3. Inclusive Engagement
Inclusion means more than being present – it means being heard, valued, and active. AWARD facilitates women’s and girls’ participation in economic, social, cultural, environmental, and innovative activities, including research and development initiatives. We break down the barriers – whether cultural, structural, or informational – that keep women on the sidelines of progress.
4. Environmental Sustainability
Women are among the most affected by climate change, yet they are also among its most powerful solutions. AWARD supports community-led initiatives for environmental protection, natural resource management, and climate change adaptation. By placing women at the centre of environmental stewardship, we create solutions that are both effective and enduring.
5. Social Inclusion
The most vulnerable must never be the most forgotten. AWARD conducts community recovery and development actions targeting the most marginalized groups to ensure equitable socio-economic opportunities and inclusion. Whether addressing poverty, displacement, or exclusion, we work to ensure that development reaches those who need it most.
6. Gender Equality & Rights
Equality is not a gift – it is a right. AWARD advocates for the promotion of gender equality and the eradication of gender-based violence. Through awareness campaigns, community dialogue, and policy engagement, we challenge the norms and systems that hold women back and champion the rights that allow them to thrive.
7. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
AWARD’s work does not exist in isolation – it is part of a global commitment to a better world. We actively support initiatives that align with and promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals within Burundi, contributing to the international frameworks that guide our collective pursuit of a just and sustainable future.
